Nato a New York, è autore di poesie e romanzi, tra cui Quando iniziò il silenzio (Baldini 2015). Ha ricevuto nel 2008 il Plimpton Prize della Paris Review ed è stato finalista al National Book Award nel 2015.
Le sue poesie sono state pubblicate sulla Best American Poetry e nel 2017 Granta lo ha inserito tra i migliori scrittori americani viventi.
NN Editore ha pubblicato il romanzo Censimento (2018).
